A message from the Sierra Leone Marathon Race Directors
If you do one thing to support the Ebola Appeal, please do this.
This is a message from your Sierra Leone Marathon race directors. We are writing to everyone who has taken part in the Sierra Leone Marathon since its launch three years ago to ask for your support at a time when Street Child needs it most. If you do one thing to support the Ebola Orphan Appeal, please reunite and come to the Benefit on 29th November.
This morning we received a troubling update from Justin Sesay in Sierra Leone - many of you would have met Justin during a rural project visit to Masimera chiefdom. If you remember your car going on a raft from Lunsar about 2 hours from Makeni, then you probably went to Masimera. Justin visited Masimera yesterday and he counted 67 orphans in just 5 villages. 67...
Sadly, the worst is still yet to come.
As a result, Street Child's focus has changed and the charity has set itself the target of supporting the thousands of children that have tragically been orphaned by the virus; a number that is increasing at a daily rate. In exactly the same way that the charity has worked with the street children that you will have had the opportunity to meet whilst in Sierra Leone, Street Child is now offering vital support to orphaned children whose lives have been torn apart by this disease: helping them find a safe secure home and, eventually, the chance to go to school. These 67 children, orphaned by Ebola are from 5 villages that most have us have visited. There are 367 more towns and villages in Masimera chiefdom alone.
Street Child's efforts have never been in greater need of support. So for the first time ever, as fellow Sierra Leone Marathon Directors, we have come together to ask our runners to unite behind Street Child’s efforts and help them offer a more positive way of life for Sierra Leone’s most vulnerable children at a time when they have never needed it more.
As Sierra Leone Marathon alumni, please join us for the Street Child’s Ebola Benefit Ball on the 29th November hosted by Nick Hewer at the Honourable Artillery Company in London. Some of you have already taken tables for what promises to be a brilliant event and the ideal way to lend your own weight to the fight against the spread of Ebola in Sierra Leone and West Africa. Our aim is to bring together as many people as possible that have shared in the unique experience that the Sierra Leone Marathon offers – and simultaneously show our support for Street Child and for a country that has touched all of our hearts.
Please join us.
To book your ticket, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call the office on 0207 614 7696 and quote SLM12/13/14 as a reference. Whether you book a table or come on your own, the marathon tables will be together so there will be plenty of opportunity to catch up with familiar faces.
We appreciate that the event is just over 2 weeks away, so if you are unable to come and still want to help in some way, please get in touch with the team who will be only too happy to hear from you.
Thank you once again for being one of many people that made our directorship of the Sierra Leone Marathon such a special experience. We hope you will be able to lend your support to the vital work that Street Child is undertaking in the fight against Ebola.
We hope to see you there!
