Street Child is a UK charity, established in 2008, that aims to create educational opportunity for some of the most vulnerable children in West Africa.

Street Child helps 10,008 children Back to School in Sierra Leone

At the close of the first term after the traumatic nine-month school closure at the height of the Ebola crisis, Street Child is proud to reveal that it is has provided direct school support to over 10,000 Ebola-affected and street-connected children. Absent such support, these children were very unlikely to attend school, or if they had, their access would likely have been highly irregular.

5,580 of the children supported are Ebola Orphans – children who have lost at least one primary care-giver to Ebola. Adding in the 1,500 Ebola orphans Street Child has provided school support to in Liberia, Street Child has now helped over 7,000 children orphaned by Ebola return to school in West Africa.

All 10,008 children have received uniforms and stationary from Street Child.

In line with Street Child’s traditional focus, a significant majority (over 8,500) of the 10,008 children have been supported into primary school.

Street programmes Director Alfred Kargbo says: “The 10,008 is a fantastic achievement.  However it is also important to note that in addition, I am sure there are thousands of further children, above this 10,008 number who would still be on the streets if it were not for the advocacy and encouragement to attend school of our more than 200 nationwide social workers. So the true impact is actually higher.”

Street Child UK CEO, Tom Dannatt added: “This is a great start. And I would like to thank DfID, our largest donor and also the many private donors, corporates and foundations who have made this possible – including those who donated to our UK Aid Match appeal in 2014.

“But a short walk through any town or village at school time tells you that significant numbers of children, more than before Ebola, are still out of school. So we are working flat out to help as many more children as possible back into school next term – as well as ensuing all of these 10,008 are retained. In particular we want to come good on our promise that every Ebola orphan will have the chance to return to school – primary or secondary. We continue to plead for further support to enable us to make the biggest difference possible!”
