Street Child Makeni
"They made contact with my parents So now I'm living with them I have no
reason to go back to the street."
Ishmael, 13yrs
PHASE 3 - 'Sustainability and exit-phase'
To help prepare children and families for their eventual exit from the programme and
to ensure the sustainability of what has been achieved on it, some provision is
made for financial assistance
For children who opt for the schooling track, a financial grant and programme of technical business or
agricultural support is made to the child's parents to help them take better care of the child - and in particular to
pay for the basics such as school fees, food and clothes
For older children on the vocational track, a
'business start up kit' is provided - e.g. a sewing kit for tailors or
tools for carpenters; and attempts will be made to help them secure an appropriate apprenticeship.
No-one can promise the happy ending for every child, it would be false to in such a harsh environment, but with
hard work and some luck, for most children this will, God-willing, be a life-changing experience; and for all it
is a chance and hope for life which they certainly totally lack right now and that is surely something in itself.
. . . And then we can, and will, find another child sleeping in a market place or lorry park and start again
with him or her . . .
